OUR
ORIGINS
A Legacy of Learning
Founded in 1976 as a Journal Club, MIMA grew into a community hosting formal dinner meetings focused on clinical microbiology.
Originally holding three meetings per year, we now gather twice annually to share scientific insights and foster collaboration.

MIMA was established by three leaders in the field: Dr. Lance Peterson (Minneapolis VAMC), Dr. John Matsen (University of Minnesota, later ARUP Laboratories), Dr. John Washington II (Mayo Clinic).

In the mid-1990s, the Minnesota Department of Health became a permanent member, marking a key milestone in our evolution.
Legacy in Action
MIMA continues to thrive as a collaborative hub for clinical microbiology professionals across Minnesota. We host two formal dinner meetings each year, featuring expert-led presentations on timely topics such as infectious diseases, diagnostics, and public health.

Many of our events also include vendor exhibits, offering attendees the opportunity to explore the latest innovations, products, and services in the field.

Our membership includes professionals from hospitals, public health institutions, academic centers, and private labs. The Minnesota Department of Health remains a key partner, helping us stay connected to statewide initiatives and emerging trends.

MIMA remains committed to fostering education, networking, and the exchange of scientific knowledge in a welcoming, collegial environment.
